T-Mobile finally brings back long-awaited feature

T-Mobile has done some things customers don’t love in recent months, including making plans to increase prices on legacy phone plans, pushing a complicated T-Life app on customers, and turning on screen recorder as a default feature, which has raised some privacy concerns.

After the company made a series of unpopular decisions, it’s not surprising that a number of customers began switching to other carriers, especially given that T-Mobile surprised customers by not including taxes and fees in its advertised Experience More and Experience Beyond Plans, which it touted as offering excellent value to customers.

While there’s obviously a lot going wrong over at T-Mobile, the carrier did at least make one decision recently that many customers will be happy about. The company has finally decided to bring back a long-awaited feature that has been discontinued since November of 2022, and that it has been promising to customers for a long time.

T-Mobile finally listens to customers, brings back in-demand feature

This week (week of June 8), when T-Mobile updated its T-Life app, users finally found the feature that many had been waiting for and requesting for years. They discovered that T-Mobile is once again offering self-service SIM changes or SIM swaps.

SIM swaps allow customers to change either the physical SIM or eSIM that is linked to a specific telephone number on a T-Mobile account. This is different from being able to physically remove a SIM card and move it to a different phone.

When you do a SIM or eSIM swap, you can transfer your phone number and service to a different device if, for example, you want to upgrade or switch devices or if you’ve lost your phone.

Self-service SIM swaps used to be an option but were discontinued back in 2022 – likely because bad actors can sometimes use SIM swaps to illegally divert a phone number, without authorization, to a SIM Card they are in possession of, so they can engage in scams like using your number to bypass two-factor authentication.

Now, however, SIM swaps are back with added layers of security, so customers can port their phone number to a new device themselves without having to wait on hold or get help from a T-Mobile agent.

Self-service SIM swaps are easy and convenient

The new self-service SIM swap feature in the T-Life app not only makes SIM swaps possible but also makes them simple for customers, so it will be more convenient for those who want to move their number to a different device or who are changing the physical SIM card in their current phones and need to move their existing number to the new card.

If you want to do a SIM Swap with your devices:

  • Open the T-Life app
  • Tap “Manage” and select the line you want to change
  • Scroll down to the “Manage your SIM” options
  • Select “SIM transfer or activation.”

You’ll need to input the IMEI of the new device that you are moving your SIM to so the app can determine if the device supports physical SIMs, eSIMs, or both.

After selecting which type of SIM to activate, you just need to enter your EID or ICCID for the SIM and then click confirm. You’ll see a confirmation, and you’ll be all done with the process and can start using your number on your new device.

The process is easy enough for anyone to do, even without advanced tech knowledge, so it’s no wonder people are excited about now having this simple way to switch devices as needed.
