A Halloween-themed restaurant opens and quickly expands
Inspired by the aesthetic of film director Tim Burton, founder Zach Neil named the restaurant “Beetle House” in honor of Burton’s 1988 movie “Beetlejuice.”
The Beetle House website describes the eatery as “like an adult Halloween party with a Burtonesque feel, a dash of a ’90s goth band, a touch of emo, and a diabolical dose of cosplay. We are a safe place where every goth, punk, freak, weirdo, artist, and visitor is welcomed and celebrated.”
The first location opened in New York City, initially as a pop-up restaurant in 2016, and due to its huge success, it expanded to Los Angeles the following year.

Beetle House is unlike any other restaurant or bar, rising to fame because of its spooky decorations and festive food and beverage menu.
Guests can enjoy dishes such as the “Edward Burger Hands” burger, which is garnished with a pair of scissors they can take home.
However, after nearly 10 years, the restaurant faced a troublesome financial crisis it wasn’t expecting.
Beetle House reveals the shocking reason for Los Angeles closure
After the Covid pandemic and the Los Angeles fires in January of this year, Beetle House may not be able to sustain operations at its Los Angeles location.
However, this tragic outcome was not due to the usual slowdown in consumer spending or misguided financial decisions. Instead, unfulfilled agreements and theft by a third party are to blame.
“The pandemic shut us down for over a year. An investor pulled out, leaving us with a $500,000 hole. A manager stole $60,000 and vanished. Then came the LA fires. Now the immigration crisis that’s devastated hospitality in this city,” wrote Beetle House in an Instagram post.

Beetle House also notes that the business was not created to profit from it; its goal was to build a loving space for the community.
The restaurant chain is currently exploring every option to prevent the Los Angeles location from closing. But if the fundraising goal is not met soon, the restaurant will be forced to shut down in July, since it can no longer pay rent and bills.
On the other hand, the New York location is stable and was not affected by the troublesome events.
