Burger King menu adds nostalgic drink after McDonald’s backlash

As the saying goes, “When opportunity knocks, don’t let fear hold you back,” and Burger King embraced it with open arms.

Competition among fast-food chains has become even tougher over the last few years, with businesses launching innovative new menu items to outdo one another.

Although ever-evolving, the beverage trend has gained popularity among fast-food chains, with many investing in their own drink creations to better compete with rivals, attract a bigger audience, and boost sales.

To take it further, Taco Bell debuted the Live Más Café in 2024 and McDonald’s opened CosMc’s in 2023 before closing all locations this year, both being beverage-focused spinoffs.

However, the investment doesn’t have to be as massive to make a successful brand; it just has to be executed at the right time.

McDonald’s launches the Cotton Candy Shake

McDonald’s  (MCD)  featured the Cotton Candy Shake on its menu in June after teasing its debut on social media for a few days. This shake features vanilla soft serve mixed with cotton candy-flavored syrup.

However, the Cotton Candy Shake was only made available across participating locations in Canada.

This created an uproar among its U.S. fans, as many claimed that McDonald’s once again excluded them from fun menu launches.

U.S. netizens took to social media to express their disappointment about the Canadian menu launch, bombarding an Instagram post by @snackolator about the release.

One saddened user commented, “I was so happy but then I realized it’s not in the U.S.”

Another user commented, “McDonald’s actually seems like a decent fast-food spot outside of the U.S.”

And a devastated user commented, “Why do American fast-food chains hate Americans so much?!?!”

Many fans have asked McDonald’s on various social media platforms to make the Cotton Candy Shake available in the U.S. Still, the company has neither confirmed nor denied whether it will bring it to other markets.

Burger King unveils a menu item similar to one from its rival McDonald’s

Restaurant Brands International’s Burger King  (QSR)  announced it is bringing back its Frozen Cotton Candy Cloud drink to participating restaurants nationwide for a limited time starting July 14.

This shake features a frozen blue raspberry and cotton candy-flavored base that can be ordered with a cold foam topping for an extra charge.

This relaunch coincidentally comes after McDonald’s released the Cotton Candy Shake, which caused so much discourse among consumers.

Although it might seem that Burger King borrowed McDonald’s idea, it appears to be the other way around.

Burger King first introduced the Frozen Cotton Candy Cloud drink in April 2024, along with the debut of its new Cloud Float digital game.

For this year’s relaunch, its digital game will return, now rebranded as Cloud Float 2, and will be available on the Burger King app.
