American Airlines will allow flight passengers to skip TSA security

Everyone loves a good vacation, free from work emails, unnecessary meetings, and everyday chaos, if only for a few days. However, the feelings aren’t reciprocated when it comes to airports.

Even the most seasoned travelers would agree that navigating a massive, confusing airport for hours isn’t exactly the trip’s highlight.

Having a smooth airport experience is almost unheard of. There’s always something wrong with the check-in kiosks, luggage mysteriously gains five pounds, and let’s not forget the chances of a flight being delayed or canceled, which has become increasingly common these days.

Nothing screams “relaxation” like standing barefoot in a security line that snakes around the terminal, juggling your shoes, belt, cellphone, laptop, and dignity. And even after nearly being half-naked, some still have the misfortune of getting flagged by the scanner for no reason.

Now imagine if that stress disappeared and going through TSA and customs was no longer a requirement.

Well, one airline might just be turning that dream into a reality, launching a new way to skip the time-consuming process.

American Airlines launches the One Stop Security Program

American Airlines  (AAL)  has launched the One Stop Security Program (OSS), which allows passengers flying on flight AA51 from Heathrow Airport in London to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to skip security when taking a connecting flight.

This means those passengers will no longer have to endure the pain of walking to immigration, picking up their luggage, re-checking their bags, and going through TSA security again, which can sometimes take multiple hours.

The new program offers travelers the convenience of easily navigating the airport, eliminating the stress of rushing through the terminals, getting lost among countless gates and check-in points, and potentially missing their flight.

However, this doesn’t mean no immigration process will take place. U.S. Customs and Border Protection will instead do the clearing process right at the gate, making it more efficient and less time-consuming by allowing them to walk directly to their next gate.

The airport staff will then transfer the luggage to the connecting flight, trusting no bag or two will be left behind in the interim.

American Airlines’ easier security process could be expanded to other flights

This new process is currently being treated as a test, and if successful, it would be extended to other connecting flights. However, the exact flights have yet to be disclosed.

“This streamlined process is expected to cut connection time by more than half, significantly improving the customer experience while maintaining the highest security standards set by CBP and TSA,” stated American Airlines’ internal memo.

This isn’t the first time American Airlines has tried to streamline the process for its international travelers.

In April, it tested the international remote baggage screening (IRBS) for travelers flying from Sydney Airport to Los Angeles International Airport. This allowed their luggage to be automatically transferred to the connecting flight without being re-checked, but passengers still had to undergo immigration and TSA screening.
