Trader Joe’s just keeps growing — new locations revealed

If it seems like every month Trader Joe’s unveils new store openings, that’s because lately it has been.

For many neighborhoods, getting a Trader Joe’s is a sign that the area is catering to a certain kind of clientele.

Even though Trader Joe’s is known as a budget-friendly grocer, its customers have above-average household incomes. According to data from Place.ai, Trader Joe’s attracts higher-income shoppers ($110.1K median household income).

And those shoppers are also loyal: In the 2025 American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) survey, Trader Joe’s (and Publix) earned the top of its rankings, based on feedback from over 41,000 shoppers.

Whether people visit for the low prices, the chili-lime tortilla chips, or the private label IPA, the store is doing something right, based on its growth.

Trader Joe’s has grown rapidly

In 2024, Trader Joe’s opened 34 new stores, and in 2025, more than 20 new neighborhoods will get their own Trader Joe’s.

The company is expanding in other ways, too: Trader Joe’s reportedly has plans to build a huge new warehouse and distribution center on Long Island.

The customer-favorite grocer recently signed a contract to acquire a 66-acre parcel of land in Islandia, located in Suffolk County, according to a report from Long Island Business News.

The proposed development spans more than 921,000 square feet, including a 756,000-square-foot warehouse, 125,000 square feet of freezer storage, and a maintenance facility measuring just over 6,200 square feet.

More on retail and bankruptcy:

Trader Joe’s is going to need all that storage space if a current trend continues. Earlier this year, retail data company Placer.ai found that Trader Joe’s and its sister grocery Aldi both increased their hold on consumers in 2025. The data also showed that fewer customers were visiting a competitor right before or right after visiting either store.

The data suggest that while Trader Joe’s used to be a store where people shopped for specific items, like snacks, dips, and sauces, it is increasingly their primary store.

Where will the new Trader Joe’s stores be located?

On September 2, Trader Joe’s added several new stores to the “Store Openings” section of its website.

Opening dates haven’t yet been shared, but the new locations are:

  • Kingwood, Texas
  • Lacey, Washington
  • Costa Mesa, California
  • Hamden, Connecticut
  • Melbourne, Florida
  • Williamsville, New York
  • Columbia, South Carolina

During the first eight months of 2025, the company held grand openings at 12 locations. And there are still around a dozen more locations slated to open later this year.

Trader Joe’s expansion data

  • Annual growth rate: Trader Joe’s store base has grown by roughly 3 to 5% per year over the past decade, slower than many national chains.
  • Average store size: Trader Joe’s locations are typically 10,000-15,000 square feet, about one-third the size of a standard grocery store.
  • Geographic concentration: Over 180 Trader Joe’s locations are in the company’s home state, California — that’s nearly one-third of the chain’s total footprint.
  • Population served: Trader Joe’s operates in 42 states, in mostly urban and suburban areas, leaving more than 15% of the U.S. population without a nearby location.
  • Jobs per store: Each new store opening generates around 40-50 jobs, meaning annual expansion translates into roughly 1,000 to 1,500 new positions nationwide.
