Tesla shares slide on earnings miss

Tesla shares were lower after hours after the company reported a beat on revenue but a miss on earnings.

After the day’s close, the company reported earnings per share of 50 cents, down from Street estimates of around 54 cents. Revenue, however, was up about 12% to $28.1 billion from $25.2 billion in the third quarter of 2025.

Automotive revenue was up about 6%. Revenue from energy generation and storage jumped 43% to 3.42 billion. Services revenue was up 24.6% to $3.48 billion. The company ended the quarter with $41.6 billion in cash and equivalents.

Tesla shares were off more than 1.7% after hours on Wednesday to $431.26 as the electric-vehicle maker reported its third-quarter results. The regular close was $438.97, down 0.8%.

More detail on the company’s business will come at the company’s earnings call. Of interest to investors is Tesla’s plans for its Robotaxi and robotics offerings. Many investors believe both are keys to its future.

The shares are up 9.6% for the year, based on the Wednesday close, and up 106.6% from the April tariff-related sell-off.

Tesla shares have gyrated wildly since CEO Elon Musk signed on as the biggest donor to President Trump’s election campaign and then as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, which implemented huge cuts to the federal government work force.

The shares fell nearly 47% between the end of 2024 and April 7, when the market hit its bottom in response to the president’s tariff proposals.

The third-quarter results come ahead of Tesla’s Nov. 6 annual meeting, when shareholders will vote on a new pay package for Musk, which is potentially worth more than $1 trillion over 10 years. Tesla’s board has argued that the expensive package—which is worth an additional 12% stake—is necessary to keep Musk engaged at the company.

Musk, who owns about 15% of the company, has said that without 25% voting power at Tesla, he would prefer to pursue his artificial-intelligence projects outside of the company. In an X post on Sunday, he threatened to leave Tesla if the package doesn’t pass.
