Costco expands recall on a potentially dangerous Kirkland product

Food recalls affect every grocery retailer, no matter its size. That means every store, from specialty grocers like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s to mega retailers like Kroger and Costco, must occasionally recall a product.

Every year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issues hundreds of recalls related to allergens, potential bacterial infections, lead contamination, and the presence of plastic, glass, wood chips, or other foreign matter.

As of November 18, 14 food and beverage recalls are listed on the FDA website.

Costco, being a nationwide retailer and one of the largest grocers in the country, has had its fair share of recalls.

In fact, in just the last 90 days, according to the FDA’s website, major recalls for Costco foods have included:

  • Moonlight Companies Yellow Peaches. In October, customers were warned that the California-grown peaches were potentially contaminated with listeria.
  • Foster Farms Honey Crunchy Jumbo Corn Dogs. In October, Costo members who had purchased the corn dogs learned of the “potential presence of pieces of wooden stick” in the batter.
  • Jimmy Dean Pancake and Sausage on a Stick. In September, Costco alerted members who had purchased the Jimmy Dean product that there were potentially wood chips in the batter coating the sausage.
  • Caesar Salad and Chicken Sandwich with Caesar Salad. In November, Costco and Ventura foods announced the recall of the prepared deli food items because of plastic material in the salad dressing.
  • Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches. In July, the snack crackers were recalled because they were incorrectly labeled as Cheese variety, even though the product may have contained peanut butter.

Now, Costco is expanding the recall of its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene.

Why this Costco Kirkland recall is expanding

Costco initially issued the prosecco recall in September, saying it affected around 400,000 bottles. On November 6, the company issued an expanded recall for its $8 prosecco, confirming that certain unopened bottles may spontaneously shatter — even when not being opened, moved, or handled.

The expanded recall now includes more than 941,400 bottles.

The recall involves glass bottles of Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG.

  • UPC Code: 196633883742
  • Costco item number: 1879870
  • Label details: The product is packaged in a green bottle with a purple foil top and a purple label featuring the words “Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG.”
  • Where the prosecco was sold: IA, IL, IN, KY, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, and WI from April 2025 through August 2025

If you think you bought one of the affected bottles, don’t open it and don’t return it; wrap it up, bag it, toss it — and get your refund, even if you don’t have a receipt.

What you should do if you have Costco Kirkland prosecco in your home

Costco provides specific instructions to avoid injury from broken glass:

  • Do not open the bottle under any circumstances.
  • Wrap the unopened bottle in paper towels.
  • Put it inside a thick plastic bag.
  • Dispose of it in regular household garbage. Do not return the bottle to Costco or attempt in-store drop-off.

If you’re a Costco member in one of the 12 states named:

  • Check your purchase history or receipts to see if you bought the prosecco between April 25 and August 26, 2025.
  • If you match the dates and location, use the safe-disposal method outlined above.
  • Keep your recall notice and take it to Costco for a refund. Even if you’ve thrown away the bottle following the guidelines, you’re still eligible.
  • If you or someone is injured by glass or cork, seek medical attention. Document the incident in case further claims or safety investigations follow.

Costco members who have questions about the recall and how to get a refund can call Ethica Wines at 786-810-7132 from Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST or email [email protected].
