Is Target open on Thanksgiving 2025?

Thanksgiving may be only the second-most-popular holiday of the year in the U.S. (top billing goes to Christmas, and Halloween takes third place, according to a 2024 YouGov survey), but it’s a day when food and table setting are tied for most important part of the day.

Okay, maybe that’s only in my house.

But inevitably during the table-decorating portion of the day, I discover that my favorite tablecloth has a stain I somehow forgot to treat the last time I used it. Or that I don’t have enough cloth napkins for the inevitable unexpected guests.

My first thought is: “I’ll just run to Target.” But maybe not so fast.

Target will open at 6 a.m. on Black Friday.

Target is closed on Thanksgiving

There are a handful of major retailers that are closed just a few holidays each year, including Thanksgiving Day, and Target is one of them.

In fact, most of Target’s competitors are also closed on Thanksgiving, including:

  • Walmart
  • Sam’s Club
  • Costco
  • Publix

It makes sense that Target and similar retailers would close on Thanksgiving. After all, Black Friday shopping starts very early the day after Thanksgiving, and Target employees deserve a day of rest before the chaos begins.

In 2024, Target fulfilled a record 43 million transactions between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the company said in an announcement. While the company has not publicly predicted whether it will meet or exceed that number, the stores are sure to be very busy this post-Thanksgiving weekend.

All Target stores open at 6 a.m. on Black Friday, according to the company announcement, and will close at regular hours. Use Target’s Store Locator to confirm local hours.

“We’re making shopping easier too, with new tools like the AI-powered Target Gift Finder that can help you pick the perfect gift for anyone on your shopping list. Store Mode in the Target app automatically switches on when you enter the store and transforms your phone into a personalized shopping assistant that can help you navigate aisles, find deals and discover new favorites,” the announcement reads.
