Dollar Tree quietly makes change customers have wanted for years

Dollar Tree has undergone a lot of changes in recent years, including raising prices above $1.00 and introducing new pricing tiers. Some of these changes haven’t been hugely popular with the store’s core audience of discount shoppers, who tend to hit the store looking for a bargain.

That’s why a recent update on a Dollar Tree policy is likely to make shoppers very happy. It provides a new opportunity for savvy shoppers to get items from The Dollar Tree at ultra-low prices that didn’t exist before.

Here’s why the change in policy is such a big win for customers, who have waited years for the rule that’s now finally in place.

Dollar Tree makes policy shift that’s sure to be popular

News of Dollar Tree’s changed policy comes via an Instagram post from The Krazy Coupon Lady, a money-saving brand founded by two coupon shoppers who give people advice on stacking coupons and sales to get rock-bottom deals.

In the Instagram Post, The Krazy Coupon Lady announced that “Dollar Tree just changed the game.”

“Starting this month, Dollar Tree is finally selling penny items to customers,” the post went on to explain. “For YEARS they’ve refused, but thanks to a policy change, they’re now yours for $0.01 — if you can find them.”

Dollar Tree employees confirm one-penny sale prices

The Dollar Tree store employees appear to have confirmed this shift in policy, according to multiple Reddit threads

“We got a message in ops center and an email from our district manager with the new policy,” one poster stated.

“We are allowed to sell the items that were part of the 4th quarter clearance event. They have now been marked down to a penny in the system. However, when a customer brings them up for purchase, we are supposed to go collect the rest of them if they left any on the shelf.”

Other posters confirmed this, indicating that they received the same ops center message at their own stores.

Here’s how to take advantage of Dollar Tree’s new one-cent policy

Penny items are typically leftover items from clearance events. As the Instagram post explained, this currently includes items left over from the recent $0.25 clearance. Use the following three tricks to take advantage of this new ultra-low pricing.

  • Find the items in the store that have been marked down to a penny. There are some lists online that can help.
  • Confirm the $0.01 price using the in-store scanner.
  • Gather all of the items that you want before going to the checkout, because after you make the purchase, store employees will go and get the items.

This process means you need to be aware of the new policy. The $0.01 items will not be advertised, and the prices won’t be featured on price tags in the store.

The good news is that the quiet deal could mean less competition for the items, since most customers may not be aware of the savings opportunity.
