Two days after the violence that erupted when the Mexican army captured and killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, a number of airlines have restarted their flights to Puerto Vallarta.
Delta, United, American Airlines, Air Canada and Southwest were all among the carriers that canceled and in some cases diverted flights already on the way to the main resort in Jalisco, the state where Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes known primarily as “El Mencho” led a cartel responsible trafficking large amounts of cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl into the U.S.
Flights to neighboring cities of Guadalajara (GDL) and Mazatlán (MZT) were also called off by a number of Mexican and international airlines.
“Services may operate with modified schedules, passengers should verify flight times”
In Canada, Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat and Toronto-based budget carrier Porter Airlines have all restarted limited services into Puerto Vallarta Airport (PVR) and Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) on Feb. 24.
Air Canada is running flights into Puerto Vallarta from Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver on Tuesday and Guadalajara on Wednesday. WestJet also announced that flights to Puerto Vallarta “will operate as scheduled to all destinations, with the safety of our guests and partners remaining our top priority.”

“Porter intends to restart flights to #PVR on Feb. 24,” the latter airline also wrote on social media platform X. “Service may operate with modified schedules, passengers should verify flight times before traveling to the airport.”
American carriers have also started to gradually resume service into Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. United Airlines ran flights into Puerto Vallarta from Denver and Houston on the night of Feb. 23 while Alaska Airlines ran its first flights into the city from Los Angeles and Seattle and Guadalajara from Los Angeles on Feb. 24.
Southwest also ran its first flight into Puerto Vallarta from Denver early Tuesday morning.
Governments of several countries had urged their citizens to shelter in place when El Mencho was killed on Feb. 22.

Delta also restarted some routes to Minneapolis, Detroit, and Atlanta on Feb. 24 while still urging those with booked travel into or out of Jalisco to monitor status updates through their booking to avoid a potentially unnecessary trip to the airport or not know that a flight they are on will run after all.
Along with other airlines, Delta has put in place a travel waiver that allows customers whose fare class would otherwise not allow for changes to cancel or rebook their flight until the start of March. Even if the original flight ends up running according to schedule, travelers can still use the voucher to change their dates or cancel it free of charge.

“You can reschedule your trip and we’ll waive change fees and fare differences,” United writes of a similar travel waiver put in place for flights into Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. “But your new flight must be a United flight departing between February 22, 2026 and March 7, 2026. Tickets must be in the same cabin and between the same cities as originally booked.”
