Shopping at the world’s largest furniture retailer, IKEA, can be overwhelming for consumers, such as this writer, considering the size of the stores and the number of products available.
IKEA’s new Chantilly, Va., store opened on June 18, 2026, measuring a massive 107,000 square feet and offering 7,700 products.
Customers might prefer to shop in a much smaller, local furniture store, like Pieroway’s Furniture in Western Massachusetts, since local furniture stores tend to have a less corporate attitude toward doing business and often you are dealing directly with the store’s owner who can make a better deal for you.
And the smaller store size is easier to navigate if a customer has a good idea of what they are looking for.
Furniture customers are often disappointed when they learn that their local furniture retailer is permanently closing.
Pieroway’s Furniture will permanently close its stores on Oct. 31, as the owner plans to retire.

Pieroway’s Furniture closes stores
That’s likely the case for many patrons of family-owned and operated Pieroway’s Furniture chain, which will close its doors for the final time on Oct. 31, as the company’s owner plans to retire and shut down the business.
The 60-year-old furniture retailer said it will close its stores in Ludlow and West Springfield, Mass., following month-long liquidation sales with deep discounts on all living room, dining and bedroom furniture; mattresses; area rugs; and accessories, according to a Oct. 1 company statement.
Pieroway’s opened its business in the 1940s as Pieroway Electrical & Mechanical, selling and repairing household appliances.
Retailer began selling furniture
Walter Wood acquired the electric and appliance business 60 years ago in 1966 and converted it to sell furniture, bedding, and accessories, becoming Pieroway’s Furniture. Current owner Michael Ouimette began working at Pieroway Electrical & Mechanical in 1964, before it transitioned to a furniture store.
The owner’s original responsibilities ranged from maintaining the property to repairing radios and televisions, which was a common service in the 1950s and 60s. He turned what started out to be a student job into a lifelong career.
Ouimette purchased the business in 1992, and his wife, Germaine, and their children became involved in the stores over the years.
Time to retire
“After many wonderful years, it’s time for me to retire, and above all, I want to say thank you to Western Massachusetts,” the owner Ouimette said. “Thank you for your trust, your loyalty and for making Pieroway’s Furniture part of your homes and your lives.
“Over the years, you’ve welcomed us into your homes, shared your stories and allowed us to help make your homes feel like home. It has truly been my privilege to serve this community,” Ouimette said.
Pieroway’s Furniture offers many of the top name brands in the furniture industry during its retirement liquidation sale, including Barcalounger, Bassett, Best Home Furnishings, Flexsteel, Sealy, Stearns & Foster, Tempur-Pedic, and Vaughan-Bassett.
