Happy Wednesday. Stock futures were mixed and oil prices were rising Wednesday as Wall Street awaited a key inflation report and prepared for more earnings reports.
Markets finished broadly lower Tuesday, with all four major U.S. indexes slipping into negative territory. JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Goldman Sachs (GS), Citigroup (C) and Wells Fargo (WFC) all reported earnings.
“Investors appear increasingly focused on forward guidance rather than headline earnings beats, particularly as executives warn that the Treasury sell-off and uncertainty around interest rates are beginning to weigh on dealmaking and trading activity,” said Daniela Hathorn, senior market analyst.
“However, the underlying economic picture remains relatively resilient, with bank executives reporting healthy consumer spending and corporate borrowing conditions.”
The September U.S. consumer price index report is scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect inflation to have risen 3.6% year over year, up from 3.4% in the previous reading.
“Attention now turns to today’s US CPI report, which could prove more influential for broader market sentiment than the initial bank results,” Hathorn said. “A softer inflation reading could reinforce expectations that the Fed has room to pause, potentially supporting equities and encouraging a broader recovery in risk appetite.”
“Conversely, persistent inflation would revive concerns about additional tightening and keep pressure on valuations.”
With S&P 500 earnings expected to grow close to 30% year over year, Hathorn added, the market has a substantial earnings cushion but little room for disappointment.
“The key question is whether corporate profits can continue growing fast enough to offset an increasingly expensive cost of capital,” she said.
BlackRock (BLK), Morgan Stanley (MS) and Bank of America (BAC) are among the companies scheduled to report earnings Wednesday.
BofA shares were down 1.32% after federal regulators fined the company more than $1.2 billion over widespread failures in its safeguards against money laundering and other illicit financial activity.
