Another iconic Disney ride to close after 43 years

When Tokyo Disneyland opened as the theme park giant’s first foray into Asia in 1983, it had a total of 20 attractions of which many were some of the most iconic rides at the parks in California and Florida: “Space Mountain”, “Haunted Mansion”, “Jungle Cruise”, and “Peter Pan’s Flight.”

The latter, which was part of the original attraction lineup at the first Disneyland in Anaheim in 1955, is a dark ride in which guests board pirate ships suspended from an overhead rail and are taken between different illuminated scenes of nighttime London and characters like Wendy, Michael, Captain Hook, and the namesake of the classic 1953 Disney animated film.

On the Tokyo Disneyland web page for the ride, the ride is currently listed as closing down between Jan. 6 and February 2, 2027. The resort has not elaborated on the reasons for the monthslong shutdown but it is likely to be related to scheduled maintenance and repairs given the 43 years it has been part of the park.

“Now you can board a flying pirate ship for two and sail from London to Never Land! So set sail on the adventure you’ve dreamed of,” Disneyland Tokyo writes in its description of the ride on its website.

Earlier this October, the “Dumbo The Flying Elephant” carousel ride in the same Fantasyland section of the park reopened after refurbishments that kept it closed to riders for much of 2026. The changes that were made include a modernized entrance marquee and a new bright blue color scheme for the arms connecting the elephant carriages.

Fantasyland went through a larger transformation in 2020 that saw the addition of the new “Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast” dark ride.

The “Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions” ride in the park’s Adventureland section has been marked for a significantly longer shutdown until April 2027. The lengthy closure has led to heightened rumors that the ride and others in the section may be shut down permanently.

“Peter Pan’s Flight” was one of the original rides opened in Tokyo Disneyland in 1983.

The 2035 Long-Term Management Strategy released by Tokyo Disney Resort operator Oriental Land Company, which is a broad vision for where it could potentially taking park rather than finalized construction plans, showed the entire Adventureland section reworked with classic rides like “Jungle Cruise”, “Western River Railroad” and “The Enchanted Tiki House” replaced by attractions inspired by more modern films like “Up” and “Moana.”

But for multigenerational fans of Peter Pan, a second “Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure” ride was built in 2024 as part of the Fantasy Springs expansion at the second Tokyo DisneySea park.

The attraction that has 12 people board a boat for a 3D dark ride meant to simulate going from swimming to flying is also marked as closing down for a week in March 2027 on the Tokyo Disneyland website, just 33 months after it was opened in Fantasy Springs.
