The expansive, 250-acre campus looks more like a utopian town than a corporate hub: one that’s filled with uniquely designed spaces, Instagrammable green spaces, and dozens of restaurants, candy shops, video arcades, fitness trainers, and even hair salons that are completely free for employees to enjoy.
Inside its office buildings, however, Meta’s work environment switches to a different kind of game — one that’s built on pressure to perform and stay two steps ahead of everyone else.
Employees undergo grueling performance reviews, frequent reorganizations, and mass layoffs that spell “game over” for tens of thousands of employees with little notice. Meta even recently experimented with worker surveillance: monitoring their clicks and keystrokes in order to train AI models — a program that workers hotly contested.

The global design firm Gensler worked on the building’s interior spaces and was careful to incorporate the “work-in-progress” aesthetic, adding in plywood ceilings, concrete floors, and shop lighting that communicate Meta’s scrappy, upstart, and iterative culture. Instead of a traditional office floor plan, unassigned seating and dynamic work zones that emphasize connection, cross-department collaboration, and instantaneous flexibility.
