American Airlines cancels multiple daily flights starting in May

An estimated 91% of Americans are planning to travel in 2026, according to a Marriott Survey. This includes 49% who hope to travel more than they did in 2025. Americans are even willing to sacrifice other things in order to make these trips happen, with 67% saying they are prioritizing experiences over travel in the upcoming year.

While travel has always been a popular pastime and will continue to be one in the New Year, trends on where people travel continually shift. Once popular destinations become disfavored, leading to shakeups in airline flight schedules and affecting businesses that are reliant on tourism.

American Airlines is one of the airlines adjusting its upcoming schedule to address changes in customer preferences. As part of this change, American Airlines has cancelled multiple daily flights beginning in May of 2026.

Those daily flights are routes that have been operating for a long time, so customers who may have gotten used to having these routes available need to be aware of the upcoming change.

American Airlines ends several daily routes

Aviation A2Z reported on the change that American Airlines has made to its upcoming schedule.  According to the report, “American Airlines (AA) is ending its New York JFK to Toronto service as cross-border demand between the US and Canada remains soft.”

American Airlines previously flew up to two daily flights from JFK to Toronto, but the change was observed in the airline’s weekly schedule updates. Travel Pulse Canada also noted that this cancellation was occurring.

Customers may be surprised at the change, as Airline Geeks indicated that “the carrier has linked the two airports for over two decades.”

Airline Geeks also indicated that American Airlines will be discontinuing seasonal service between Philadelphia and Hilton Head, South Carolina. The flight is expected to be available four times in June of 2026, but it will not continue to operate in either July or August.

Why is American Airlines ending the daily flights?

Aviation A2Z speculated on American Airlines’ decision to end the flights, indicating that “American appears to be reallocating capacity toward higher-performing domestic and international routes.”

The reality is that the market for travel from Toronto to New York has softened, with the BBC reporting in November that many Canadians were boycotting travel to the U.S. in light of political tensions between the two countries.

“US. Air travel from Canada to the US dropped nearly 24%, while car travel fell more than 30% when compared to the same period last year,” The BBC said, reporting on data from Canada’s statistics office.

While Airline Geeks said that an American Airlines spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment about the change, American Airlines is likely dropping the route due to this shift in demand. Airlines make changes to flight schedules regularly as consumer preferences change, and this is just one more example of that occurring.

Customers will be upset at the end of the popular route

While airlines change their flight schedules often, and this shift is happening well in advance, some customers may already have planned to use this flight to get to their final destination. If so, they will need to make adjustments to their travel schedule.
