As one of many small perks airlines use to offer travelers who book higher fare classes a more luxurious experience, in-flight amenity kits date back to the 1950s, when several carriers first thought to put the toiletries they gave out mid-flight into branded pouches.
While the selection of common toiletry items changed surprisingly little over the decades, kits from the past are always fun to look through — 1960s-era kits had razors and golden shaving cream bottles that now look like something out of “Mad Men,” USA Today noted. Some airlines even gave travelers matches, up until smoking on planes was definitively banned at the end of the 1980s.
To celebrate the 100-year anniversary of its founding in April 2026, American Airlines has launched three nostalgic amenity kits that mark three periods in aviation history. The Astrojet kit celebrates the beginning of accessible commercial aviation in the 1940s and 1950s, the Silverbird kit represents the rise and “golden era” that followed, and the Forward kit evokes what the future of air travel may bring.

With the bags holding them designed in the colors and design styles of those three periods, the “Centennial Collection” kits include a selection of bamboo toothbrushes, Joanna Vargas skincare products, socks, and various other toiletries given to travelers in first class, business class, and premium economy.
Some new items in the kits include a cosmetic sheet mask and eye patches added to the most expansive amenity kit for first travelers and themed centennial tube socks for all three classes.

“As we celebrate a century of connecting customers to the world, we wanted this milestone to feel personal the moment someone settles into their seat,” American Airlines’ Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said in a statement on the new kits.
“Every detail in these centennial kits and pajamas pays homage to the eras that shaped us — from the bold optimism of Astrojet to the refined glamour of Silverbird and the forward momentum guiding our next century.”
American will continue to mark its 100-year anniversary throughout the spring and the rest of the year with efforts like a special centennial livery for one of its Boeing 737 aircraft and videos about the carrier’s early history to be played aboard flights.

Pajamas are handed out to customers traveling in First and Flagship Suite seats, as well as business travelers on ultra‑long‑haul flights between the U.S. and Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East (a business flight to Europe will not cut it).
Travelers in these fare classes on select domestic and international routes throughout the spring also have a chance to experience a special menu of historic dishes such as Waldorf salad, beef Wellington, deviled eggs, and caviar with blinis.
