In November 2021, a bill pumping $1.3 trillion into various transportation and highway projects across the country was passed by Congress and signed into law by then-President Joseph Biden.
Many of the projects that have been financed by the funds, such as railway bridge improvement in Connecticut and Maryland, as well as a tunnel replacement on the Amtrak railway between Baltimore and Washington, are still underway.
Shortly after he finished his first term in the White House and as the bill was being discussed and promoted, Donald Trump called the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act a “loser for the USA” and a “so-called bipartisan bill” that was designed by “Radical Left Democrats.”
Signs with President Trump’s name pop up on Amtrak projects across the country
As highlighted in a feature by the New York Times, signs reading “PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP” atop “REBUILDING AMERICA’S INFRASTRUCTURE” have appeared around the gates cordoning off construction of the new Connecticut River Bridge, Seattle Rail Yard, and Baltimore tunnel replacement, among several other projects.
When asked whether the signs could lead to the mistaken impression that the current president was behind the bill that financed these projects, Amtrak spokesperson W. Kyle Anderson denied that the new signs were anything other than “a voluntary Amtrak initiative.”
A note that the project is “funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act” appears underneath in smaller letters.

The goal, Anderson continues, was to replace “outdated signage posted at the project locations listed previously, following the change in presidential administrations earlier this year.”
A similar sign on the replacement of the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge was also spotted by locals in Maryland in March 2025 and caused a similar outcry on Reddit over perceived efforts to take credit for a bill that Trump worked to kill.

Amtrak appreciates “Trump administration’s strong support” for company’s infrastructure investments
Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (D-Wa.), who represents the Seattle district where the railyard renewal project is being completed, told The New York Times that she sees it as “Trump […] demanding loyalty from every single government agency.”
Fellow Representative Joe Courtney (D-Conn.) also said that President Trump’s name on signs about the replacement of the new Connecticut River Bridge confused him, as the project “would never have gotten where it is today without that bill, which [Trump] opposed.”

A week after being inaugurated in January 2025, President Trump additionally signed an executive order to “immediately pause the disbursement of funds” of the same infrastructure bill, although funding for specific projects has continued to be dispersed.
Expanding on his statement, Anderson said past signs featured President Biden’s name when he was in the White House.
Anderson added that Amtrak “appreciate[s] the Trump administration’s strong support for Amtrak’s historic infrastructure investments” for approval of the 3,200 grants that had been backlogged under the previous administration.
Amtrak did not immediately reply to TheStreet’s request for further comment on how the signs are being perceived by the residents who come across them.
