Delta Air Lines reported strong earnings in the second quarter of 2025, setting it apart from other airlines that have been struggling. When sharing Delta’s earnings, CEO Edward Bastian made clear that the airline would be “adjusting our capacity to match demand.”
Now, the airline is making some of those adjustments. Specifically, Delta Air Lines recently revealed that it would discontinue flights to one major U.S. airport. The change will take effect this November.

Delta Air Lines has consistently flown multiple daily flights to the airport it’s pulling out of, so this will be a major change for affected customers.Â
Those who are currently traveling on Delta flights from this airport will need to find a different carrier to get to their destination, which could cause a disruption to travel.

Delta Air Lines is pulling out of this major airport
The routes that Delta is canceling beginning in November include flights between Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF).
The airline has been flying three routes daily, but now will be exiting Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF) entirely, with no more flights going to this airport from any destination.

Airline passengers have had access to this Delta flight since April of 2024, so this will be a major change after more than a year of travel.
“While I am disappointed to learn that Delta Airlines will no longer be servicing our airport, it does not diminish our commitment to ensuring Midland International Air & Space Port continues to thrive and meet the needs of our residents and those traveling through the Permian Basin,” Councilwoman Robin Poole, the City Council’s liaison to the Airports Department, said in a statement.
Delta Air Lines is stopping flights due to low demand
Delta Air Lines is going to be discontinuing its flight to Midland from Austin in large part because there was very low demand for it.
The U.S. Department of Transportation data shows that load factors were under 60% in the past year. Some have speculated that Delta was operating this route only to maintain access to gates at the airport in Austin, where the airline recently announced a major expansion.
Travelers will have another option for getting to Austin
While this is not a major surprise, it’s still likely to be a disappointment to travelers.
The good news is that there’s still a non-stop flight from Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF), so travelers will not be left without choices.Â
Southwest operates one daily flight from Midland to Austin, and that is likely going to continue because Southwest is the dominant carrier at this smaller regional airport.

Almost half of the market share at Midland belongs to Southwest, and Southwest flies five of the routes out of the airport.Â
However, reports indicate that city officials are looking for additional opportunities to expand connections from Midland and will be investing tens of millions into a terminal expansion at the airport, as well as customer service improvements.
Delta Air Lines is launching more routes
While Delta is canceling the Midland/Austin route, the airline is expanding in other places, including launching international services on December 20, leaving from Austin to Cancun and Austin to Cabo San Lucas.
This continues Delta’s efforts to expand its Austin operations, where it will soon open a permanent flight attendant base beginning in October.Â
