Dollar General is the most convenient retailer for many Americans.
The stores stock everything from paper towels, snacks, and batteries to small electronics — and plenty of last-minute items you didn’t realize you needed until the night before the holiday.
For many shoppers — especially in small towns and rural areas — Dollar General is simply the closest option. That’s why holiday hours matter.
Dollar General has built its business around being open when people need it, but even the discount chain takes a break on certain major holidays.

Is Dollar General open on Christmas Eve?
While Dollar General closes on Christmas Day, most locations are open on Christmas Eve from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Hours may vary by store, and since the company allows some flexibility at the store level, customers are advised to check with the company’s store locator for exact closing times.
The retailer typically resumes regular hours on Dec. 26.
Where Dollar General stores operate
Dollar General operates some 21,000 stores across the U.S., many of them in rural communities that have limited retail options.
In some regions, Dollar General stores serve as the go-to option for food and pantry essentials, household supplies, batteries, and small electronics. Dollar General also carries a variety of holiday decor, from gift wrap to tree ornaments.
For shoppers who don’t live near a big-box store like Walmart or Costco, or a supermarket like Kroger, Dollar General is a lifeline, and knowing when it’s closed can make or break last-minute holiday plans.
