Is Walmart open on Labor Day?

It’s not easy to see summer come to an end. If you’re someone who loves nothing more than to throw some meat on the grill or enjoy a day at the beach, Labor Day is definitely a mixed bag.

On the other hand, if you have plans for a big Labor Day celebration, that can definitely soften the blow. And whether you’re hosting or attending that shindig, it’s natural to wind up needing some last-minute supplies, from food to beverages to extra paper plates.

It’s important to know which major retailers are open on Labor Day and which are closed. The last thing you want is to run out on an emergency shopping trip only to find out that your go-to store is closed.

Thankfully, many retail stores are, in fact, open on Labor Day. So you may not be out of luck.

Is Walmart open on Labor Day?

If there’s one store that sells pretty much anything you can imagine, it’s Walmart. And given Walmart’s low prices, you may be tempted to run in on Labor Day to not only grab some last-minute items for a barbecue, but also, pick up some back-to-school clothing or supplies you’re still missing.

Walmart knows how much its customers rely on it to be open. For this reason, the store closes sparingly during the year.

In fact, Walmart will be open on Labor Day, so you can count on being able to run in for whatever it is you need.

That said, Walmart, like other retailers, may only be operating with limited Labor Day hours. It’s best to call before you head out to avoid making a wasted trip.

Walmart store closures are rare

Walmart knows that one of the ways it can offer value to customers is to make its merchandise available to them at times when other retailers may be closed.

Costco, for example, is closing its doors to customers on Labor Day. But Walmart only closes its stores two days out of the year:

  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

Walmart closes on Thanksgiving, despite it being a big shopping day, because it understands that its employees may want to spend the day with family. Closing on Christmas Day is less of a problem, since it’s not as popular a time for people to shop.
