Nvidia’s headquarters: An ode to space and 3D rendering

Nvidia is the world’s largest publicly traded company. As such, it boasts state-of-the-art, futuristic office space that highlights its status as a Silicon Valley tech giant. While Apple has a ring-shaped headquarters, known as Apple Park, Nvidia’s headquarters are polygonal in shape, which supposedly symbolizes the basic building block of 3D rendering — a representation of Nvidia’s business.

Here’s what you need to know about Nvidia’s headquarters in the heart of Silicon Valley, including how much it cost and how it was built.

Where is Nvidia’s headquarters?

Nvidia’s headquarters are located by the San Tomas Expressway in Santa Clara, California. Its vast campus comprises both old and new buildings, with most built in the past decade.

The main office is divided into two buildings that were built in separate phases and have space-themed names. Construction of Endeavor, named after a NASA space shuttle, was done in 2017, and Voyager, named after a starship from the Star Trek TV series, was completed in 2022.

The headquarters are home to the company’s research and development departments, which focus on artificial intelligence and GPU design. It also houses other divisions that focus on robotics, autonomous vehicles, cloud computing, and high-performance computing.

How much did it cost to build Nvidia’s headquarters?

The reported cost for the construction of Nvidia’s latest headquarters was $920 million, according to Forbes. By comparison, Apple’s Apple Park reportedly cost around $5 billion, partly due to customized building materials such as the curved glass that surrounds the exterior.

What are the features of Nvidia’s headquarters?

The headquarters’ design focused on energy efficiency and sustainability, featuring roof-mounted solar panels and irrigation water-reclamation systems. The two buildings, which cover 1.25 million square feet of office space, were constructed with exposed triangular-grid structural steel framing. The roofs are a pattern of interconnected triangles.

Enclos, a contractor that worked with the buildings’ designer and general contractor, said on its website that Endeavor has 500,000 square feet of workspace and can accommodate 2,500 employees. Voyager has 750,000 square feet and can hold more than 3,000 people, while an outdoor space can accommodate 1,300.

Enclos also said Endeavor features a 30,000-square-foot executive briefing center, an 800-seat cafeteria, over 200 conference and phone rooms, and a two-level underground parking structure.

Who designed Nvidia’s headquarters?

Gensler, a San Francisco-based architecture and design firm, was behind the creation of Nvidia’s Endeavor and Voyager buildings. Gensler said it helped Nvidia “design a campus to embody a culture of collaboration, creativity, and employee well-being.”

The Voyager building received an award for Excellence in Architecture from the American Institute of Steel Construction. The group said, “The high, cavernous ceilings allow for large, open spaces that invoke the outdoors right next to the more intimate workspaces.”

Where was Nvidia’s original headquarters?

Nvidia has always had a presence in Silicon Valley, and its original headquarters were in a townhouse in near Fremont when it was founded in 1993. The company later moved to Sunnyvale, also nearby, before moving to Santa Clara in 1998.

Nvidia continues to purchase property in areas near its Santa Clara offices as it continues to grow.
