In the 1990s, “Seinfeld” had a series of episodes when Jerry Seinfeld encouraged Babu Bhatt, a minor side character on the show, to change his generic cafe to one featuring his native Pakistani food.
That, as you may remember, does not go very well, leading to Bhatt calling Seinfeld “a very bad man.”
And, while the 90s television show wasn’t seeking to teach a business lesson, it did show the challenge of introducing an unfamiliar cuisine even in a very large market.
“Consumers are programmed from early childhood to prefer familiar foods,” Hely Tuorila and Christina Hartmann wrote in Food Research International.
Getting Americans to try unfamiliar foods is a challenge.
“The biggest barrier to restaurants participating in cross-cultural exploration, however, is getting consumers on board and selling this unfamiliar food. Restaurants must not only convince customers of the value of the dish, but also that it’s safe for them to try it,” wrote FSR Magazine.
That’s a challenge Premier Meat Pies took on, trying to bring Australian-style meat pies to an American audience. Those efforts appear to have failed as the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Premier Meat Pies filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy
“Premier Meat Pies, LLC, a Renton, WA-based limited-service restaurant specializing in Australian-style meat pies, filed for chapter 11 protection on April 14, 2026 in the Western District of Washington,” according to documents filed on PacerMonitor.
Premier Meat Pies Chapter 11 filing is case number 2:26-bk-11203. The bankruptcy was filed by Jennifer L Neeleman of Neeleman Law Group, P.C. on behalf of Premier Meat Pies, LLC.
The company maintains active operations across three retail locations in the Puget Sound region, including the Seattle Center Armory, Waterfront Pier 54, and a flagship bakery in Renton. It also ships its signature meat pies around the country, according to its website.
Premier Meat Pies promotes its pub-style restaurants as offering “fresh pies, cold pints, and warm hospitality.”

The company shows $100,000 to $500,000 in assets and $1 million to $10 million in liabilities, according to the documents filed on PacerMonitor.
Recent records indicate the company held an active food establishment status and a renewed liquor license just days prior to the filing, according to the Washington State Liquor Board.
Meat pies are an unfamiliar food to many Americans.

Premier Meat Pies faced a challenging market
Premier Meat Pies Managing Partner Nathan Bainbridge admitted that his company faced a challenge in trying to introduce a new food in the U.S.
“The idea behind Premier Meat Pies is that when you go to a Premier League match, basically your food options are either a pie or fish and chips,” Bainbridge told the Kitsap Sun in 2023. “We wanted to bring that tradition to the United States.”
He acknowledged that meat pies did not have a lot of awareness in the market.
“It’s kind of a niche thing,” he added.
Former Premier Bob Carr of the state of Australian state of New South Wales called meat pies “our national dish” in 2003.
“The hand-held pies with flaky crusts, usually containing beef and gravy or sauce, are a favorite stadium food for Aussie sports fans and are so highly regarded that there are dozens of competitions for best pie each year,” the Des Moines Register reported.
Premier Meat Pies stores and website remain open, although the website has not been updated and still shows Saint Patrick’s Day specials on its home page.
