Update: 10:04 a.m. ET
ISM Services Exceeds Expectations; JOLTs Disappoints
The most weighty economic data reports of the day are just out — and it’s a mixed batch.
While the ISM Services Index hit a 14-month high of 54.4 (higher than the 52.2 estimated by analysts), Job Openings for the month of November came in at 7.146 million (considerably less than the 7.648 million expected.)
The reports follow the ADP Employment Change for December, which showed that private employers added 41,000 positions in the month.
The news has shook up stock benchmarks this morning. The S&P 500and Dow retreated from intraday highs, while the Russell 2000 also gave up recent gains. The Nasdaq, by contrast, is on the rise.
Update: 9:30 a.m. ET
Opening Bell
The U.S. markets are open and right out of the gate, it’s a record-setter.
Not even a full minute into the trading day, the S&P 500 and Dow hit new intraday highs. The indexes are up 0.04% and 0.23% respectively this morning to 6,947.81 and 49,576.83. We’ll see if they can hold onto those gains for another consecutive record close today.
Here’s the S&P 500 heat map this morning, which counts tech, financials, and the energy sector absent. Today’s gains seem to be coming out of healthcare, real estate, cyclicals, communication services, and industrials.

Meanwhile, the Russell 2000 is up about 0.12% to 2,582.90, still short of any sort of record. It’ll need to have a strong day of trading today to make those sort of moves.
Rounding out the major indexes, the Nasdaq Composite (-0.09%) is the sole index in the red this morning, still sitting above its new 49,000 perch.
In commodity land, continuous futures in WTI Crude (-0.81%) declined to $56.66 today, while Natural Gas (+2.69%) rose to $2.907. Gold (-0.92% to $4,454.70), Silver (-5.51% to $76.57), and other metals fell.
Here’s what else is up today:
Economic Data + Events: ADP Employment, ISM Services, JOLTs
Today is as busy a day as they come in economic data land, with over a dozen reports. Some of them are already out this morning, including the ADP Employment Change, which showed that ADP employers added about 41,000 jobs in the month of December, up from a loss of 29,000 in November.
It won’t be the last report we get through today. The ISM Services PMI and JOLTs Job Openings are also on deck for the ten o’clock hour, which we’ll add here when we get there.

Earnings Today: Constellation, Jefferies, Albertsons
Today will also kick off the Q4 earnings season, albeit unofficially. Today’s slate will include alcohol giant Constellation, financial company Jefferies, and grocery player Albertsons. Here’s the full slate of firms worth at least $1 billion that are slated for reporting today:
