T-Mobile unveils timing of major subscriber upgrade

T-Mobile has been focused on building the strongest network in the country, investing billions in the project and acquiring competitors like Sprint to help boost network capacity.

The good news is that the company’s efforts have paid off. The “uncarrier” was able to build a robust nationwide network that Ookla Speedtest just named the best in America.

Ookla’s announcement that T-Mobile beat out the competition came at a good time for the company. T-Mobile has faced a lot of criticism of late for various business decisions, including raising prices on legacy plans and obscuring the total cost of some plans by quoting them without taxes.

Still, despite these customer service challenges, a strong network goes a long way toward convincing people to sign up and remain customers over time.

Evidence suggests T-Mobile knows that, too.

The company’s big investments in developing and perfecting network technology demonstrate that the carrier is well aware of just how important reliability and speed can be.

That’s why the carrier is continually pushing the edge in terms of pursuing new technological breakthroughs.

One of those breakthroughs could be especially exciting, and according to the company’s Chief Technology Officer Ulf Ewaldsson, it’s expected to arrive sooner than you’d think.

T-Mobile says this major upgrade to its network is coming

While celebrating T-Mobile’s big win of being recognized for the country’s strongest network, Ewaldsson also made several forward-focused statements about the carrier’s recent progress.

At a presentation in Copenhagen in June 2025, he said exciting new technology could be widely available very soon.

“By the end of the decade, we will have 6G, and 6G will have maybe 100 times more data usage than what we envisioned, lower than one millisecond latency, and perhaps 500 billion connected devices globally,” Ewaldsson declared at the presentation. “Artificially intelligent and intent-based, the 6G network will react immediately to any user’s service needs like a personal valet. It will create maybe $10 trillion of economic value.”

T-Mobile is not the only carrier that is part of a race to perfect 6G technology. Communications companies in both the United States and China seem focused on making new advances into this network upgrade, even as carriers in the EU lag behind, thanks to lower consumer spending on phone service and tighter regulations in Europe.

Still, if Ewaldsson’s prediction pans out and T-Mobile successfully facilitates the transition to 6G by 2030, it could be a game-changer.

How will 6G change your T-Mobile service?

If the T-Mobile CTO is right and 6G arrives by 2030, it will be a major positive change for T-Mobile users. That’s because 6G is expected to provide a number of big benefits including:

  • Significantly faster speeds up to 100 gigabits per second, allowing for movies to be downloaded in seconds
  • Lower latency, with lag time limited to microseconds, so communication can be instantaneous
  • Higher data capacity to allow for more connected devices
  • AI-enabled network optimization to ensure peak performance, effective use of resources, and personalized user experiences

Ewaldsson confirmed that the push toward 6G aims to improve the customer experience, posting on X in mid-June, “…We’re building 6G around you with intent-based networking. From 5G slicing to 6G speed, we’re laying the groundwork for exciting things to come.”

For now, consumers will just have to wait for news of the network’s development — but as T-Mobile’s CTO has made clear, it could arrive sooner rather than later.
