“I told my therapist, ‘I just want to be as happy as a Trader Joe’s cashier.'” That little joke is courtesy of Conan O’Brien, but he’s definitely on to something.
Trader Joe’s is one of those places people have strong feelings about, and part of that is just the vibe. Even the team members who are hucking crates of bananas and cases of beer generally seem to be doing it cheerfully.
I mean, it’s work, but I’ve never seen a Trader Joe’s worker who looks miserable.

I buy fresh flowers at Trader Joe’s every week — the selection can be limited but the prices can’t be beat — and sometimes, if the flowers I want are looking a little sad, I’ll ask one of the team members to see if they have any more in the back. Never once has my request been denied, and I’ve exchanged plenty of flower-arranging tips with the (usually) smiling women who sort the flowers.
The other place the team members are always happy? The food sampling booth. You know, that corner where a Trader Joe’s employee hands out samples of one of their concoctions or lets people try new or seasonal foods?

- Strawberry Baton Wafer Cookies – Flaky cookies filled with strawberry creme

While Trader Joe’s is known for its offbeat snacks and treats, it stocks plenty of staples, too, which is why it’s become a primary grocery store for many shoppers, according to data from retail analytics firm Placer.ai. Their report showed that fewer Trader Joe’s customers go to a competitor right before or after visiting a TJ’s.
