The past few years have been brutal for retail establishments.
The pandemic temporarily shuttered many stores, and many retailers have struggled to stay open since 2020. We’ve seen countless retail bankruptcies, from clothing and furniture stores to book sellers.
You’d think essential retailers would’ve fared better since they were, well, essential. And many have managed to thrive in the past five years.

But even supermarket chains have not been immune to closures, and that’s at a time when consumers are cutting back on restaurant spending and forcing themselves to cook so they can save money.
Grocery chains with a solid reputation, however, have managed to do well during these tricky economic times. That’s especially true for supermarkets that are known for their low prices, plus unique products and outstanding customer service.

Trader Joe’s has long been a consumer favorite
If you shop at Trader Joe’s on a regular basis, you probably know that there are too many good things about the store to count.
For one thing, the selection is downright fantastic. Not only does Trader Joe’s do a great job of mixing up its inventory, but it also rotates products seasonally so customers get the best of all worlds.
In September and October, you can buy apple-flavored everything — including candles. Want some fun turkey-shaped treats in November? Trader Joe’s has you covered.
And in December, Trader Joe’s turns into a virtual winter wonderland, stocking its shelves with everything from peppermint-flavored goodies to candy-laden advent calendars and high-end holiday chocolates.
Plus, the customer service at Trader Joe’s is pretty unbeatable. “Service with a smile” is clearly the mantra, and Trader Joe’s crew members are among the nicest in all of retail.

When you’re doing a task that’s as mundane as grocery shopping, it’s nice to have someone come over to you and ask if you need help, or to have someone be willing to go out of their way to help you find a product you’re not seeing on the shelves, or even offer their favorite recipes.
Plus, there’s always a good chance of a crew member serving samples in the rear of the store, so you can grab a snack while you shop.
Trader Joe’s has huge announcement fans should love
If there’s one bad thing Trader Joe’s fans might have to say about the store, it’s that the parking is generally terrible, no matter where you shop, and that there aren’t enough stores.
It’s rare for a city to have more than a couple of stores. Indianapolis, for example, is a mid-sized city with 24 Kroger markets within its limits, but just three Trader Joe’s.
In that regard, there’s good news.
Trader Joe’s just updated its “opening soon” list, which includes 30 new store locations. Although official opening dates have not yet been confirmed, some stores are expected to welcome customers before 2025 ends.

Interestingly, the company made the decision to open a new store in Sherman Oaks, Calif., despite its close proximity to an existing store.
Dubbed “Sherman Oaks, Too,” the new store is across the street from a store that’s been there for 50 years. The new location has better parking, which will be a draw for many shoppers.

At a time when consumers are doing their best to stretch their paychecks and the threat of tariffs looms, having access to more Trader Joe’s stores is a good thing. And if the company’s expansion plans prove successful, there’s a good chance Trader Joe’s will seek to expand its store footprint even more in 2026.
