Uber is changing how travelers order rides at airports

With numbers released over the years showing that approximately 15% of the rides booked on Uber either go to or originate at an airport, the ride-hailing company has experimented with different options for how it gets customers to their flights.

At the end of 2024, the company launched the Uber Shuttle, picking up groups of travelers out of JFK and LaGuardia airports in New York at set times, while also planning to expand the service to cities including Chicago, Charlotte, and Pittsburgh.

In November 2025, Uber also partnered with Delta Air Lines to create a specific drop-off spot closest to check-in and security for travelers who have status with the airline. While multiple regulatory hurdles still need to be cleared, Uber has also promised flying eVTOL air taxis from airports in New York and Los Angeles by 2027.

Uber Kiosk to appear at LaGuardia Airport

Uber also recently confirmed plans to launch Uber Kiosk, a booth at airports that travelers without an international data plan or phone access can use to book a ride.

The first Uber Kiosk will debut at Terminal C of New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) this month. It will print a trip confirmation receipt that the traveler can show to the driver picking them up.

The rental platform is presenting it as a “new, phone-free way to book an Uber […] and request a ride directly from a physical touchscreen even if they don’t have the Uber app.”

Otherwise, it should work like the app: The rider enters the departure and arrival destinations into the kiosk in either the UberX, Comfort, or XL fare class, then goes to meet the driver at the airport’s rideshare pickup area.

The Uber Shuttle debuted at certain airports in the New York area at the end of 2024.

Uber Shuttle to also come to Newark, more cities on the horizon

As part of the same announcement about its changes to airport travel, Uber confirmed that it is expanding Uber Shuttle to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

The two routes into Manhattan go from either Hudson Yards to Grand Central with a stop in Bryant Park, or uptown from the West Village to 54th Street and Seventh Avenue with stops in Chelsea, Penn Station, and Times Square along the way.

Uber confirmed plans to expand both Kiosk and Shuttle to more airports in additional cities in the coming months, alongside stops in hotels and cruise ports anticipated for certain destinations with specific travel trends.

In an update that will be applicable across all rides booked through a phone, Uber is also changing the tipping feature to allow travelers to add a tip during the ride instead of only once one has exited the vehicle.

The update, aimed at passengers who feel they connected with their driver, is currently available through the Uber app installed on iOS devices, but will also be expanded to Android in the near future.
