Disney World closes popular ride after major change

A trip to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World usually requires a ride on the iconic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction or maybe Space Mountain for thrill-seekers.

For young children, and maybe some nostalgic adults, a stroll through Fantasyland might require a ride on Peter Pan’s Flight, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, or maybe the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

Visitors might be a little disappointed if their favorite ride is closed for refurbishment or maintenance when they arrive, so it’s best to check the theme park’s attractions page to verify the status of rides, whether they are open or closed for an extended amount of time.

Tiana’s Bayou ride closes until Dec. 18

If visitors check the attractions page, they will learn that Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom closed its Tiana’s Bayou Adventure attraction on Nov. 2 after opening to big fanfare two years ago.

The Orlando theme park revealed on its Tiana’s Bayou Adventure webpage that it temporarily closed the attraction for routine refurbishment on Nov. 2, and it is expected to reopen on Dec 18.

The former Splash Mountain attraction’s webpage lists no operating hours for the ride on Dec. 17 and earlier days, but the operating hours are listed as 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 18, with a special ticketed event from 6:30 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Tiana’s Bayou General Store at Magic Kingdom also closed on Nov. 2 for refurbishment.

Splash Mountain ride goes dark

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ride opened at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom on June 28, 2024, after a year and a half transformation from the popular Splash Mountain ride.

The Splash Mountain attraction, which was a “Song of the South”-themed ride, opened on Oct. 2, 1992, and closed on Jan. 22, 2023, to be reimagined as a “The Princess and the Frog”-themed ride.

Disneyland’s Splash Mountain ride in Anaheim, Calif., opened on July 17, 1989, becoming one of the park’s most popular rides with long lines stretching around the attraction. Disneyland closed the ride on May 31, 2023, to transform the attraction to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure before reopening on Nov. 15, 2024.

Anaheim and Orlando are the only Disney theme parks that operate Tiana’s Bayou Adventure attractions. Tokyo Disneyland operates the last remaining “Song of the South”-themed Splash Mountain ride, but Disney has no current plans to transform the ride into the “The Princess and the Frog” theme or other concept.

Carousel of Progress to shut down

Disney World’s Magic Kingdom also temporarily closed The Carousel of Progress on July 6, 2026, for major renovations, and will reopen the iconic attraction in late spring 2027, according to the Disney website.

The attraction debuted at the New York World’s Fair in 1964, known as Progressland at that time, before moving to Disneyland in Anaheim about three years later, and then moving to Orlando in 1975.

Jungle Cruise closes for maintenance

Tokyo Disneyland has been busy completing maintenance and refurbishments of attractions and scheduled a closing of its Jungle Cruise ride beginning Jan. 6, 2027, and continuing through March before reopening on April 1, 2027.

Japan’s Disneyland theme park will also temporarily close its Peter Pan’s Flight attraction, which launched when the park opened in 1983, for maintenance and repairs from Jan. 6, 2027, through Feb. 2, 2027, according to the park’s attractions webpage.
